Masopust Celebration Spring 2023

Masopust is a traditional carnival celebrating the arrival of spring, fertility, fecundity of animals, human joy, unity and farewell to winter. Masquerade processions, feasts, dancing and singing in the streets are a permanent part of the carnival festivities in Prague.

Friends, we invite you to attend the celebration of the Czech Masopust holiday!

Masopust is a traditional carnival celebrating the arrival of spring, fertility, fecundity of animals, human joy, unity and farewell to winter. The word "Masopust" itself, which comes from the old Czech language, means "renunciation of meat," that is, the beginning of the fasting season before Easter.

Masquerade processions, feasts, dancing and singing in the streets are a regular part of the carnival festivities in Prague.

Locations of the festivities:

Malostranská Square. 18.02

⏰Starting at 13:00 on Loretánské náměstí, Hostinec U Černého vola.

Loretánské nám. 107/1, 118 00 Praha 1 - Hradčany

The traditional carnival procession of masks in the scenery of Malá Strana and Hradčany takes place from Loretánské náměstí to Kampa. Participants usually meet between 13:00 and 13:30 in front of the inn "At the Black Ox". The masks stop at the inns and restaurants in Nerudova, Tunovska, Mosteck and Malostranskie quays. The band Kutheil will play along the way. The culmination of the carnival with the festival and the arrival of the masks is planned for 16:00. There will be plum, mulled wine and carnival food at the festivities.

Carlin Carnival. 18.02

⏰Starting at 1 p.m. in Kaizlovy sady.

Kaizlovy sady, Prague 8

As part of the 19th edition of the traditional Karlín Masopust, kiosks with carnival delicacies such as sweet and savoury pies, buns and delicacies will once again appear on Karlínská náměstí. From 2 p.m. visitors will enjoy a rich accompanying program for children (a theatrical fairy tale and creative workshops) and adults (Ivan Hlas trio and Šoulet band). Children in masks will receive a sweet reward. The carnival procession will leave at about 13:00 from Kaisel Garden in the direction of Karlinski náměstí. Admission to the event is free.

Žižkov market and carnival. 18.02

⏰ From 8 to 19 hours, the procession starts at Jiřího z Poděbrad square.

The traditional carnival procession will leave from Jiřího z Poděbrady Square through Havlíčkovské Square to the Victoria Žižkov Stadium on 18 February. Horse-drawn carriages, musicians, stilt-walkers, artists and giant puppets of angels or pigs will once again enter Vinohrady and Žižkov Streets in order to receive the key to Žižkov from the Town Hall. During the route, participants will be able to refresh themselves with treats, which will be handed out for free to anyone who joins the procession.

Admission to the carnival is free.
